Here rest in the Lord Jesus, Richard Glanfield and Elizabeth his wife, laid together here in the year of our lord 1637. Both by hard and honest toil increased honourably their own wealth and that of the state. Both were joined together for almost four and twenty years and were not parted long by death itself. Therefore their grieving son Richard, Priest of Pembroke, covers them with this small work of duty, as they sleep in their cold bed of earth.
Other information
Richard was married 2 times.Richard Glanfield left a will on 14 May 1637 the will starts "in the Name of God Amen the four and twentieth day of December in the year of our lord God one thousand six hundred and thirty six I Richard Glanfeild of Hadleigh in the County of Suffolk the elder", followed possibly by "JP".
It concludes by being signed and sealed on "the fourteenth of May one thousand six hundred and thirty seven".
In the will he names a lot of property in many places.
He mentions a living wife, but does not name her
He desires "his sons or children" to take action, denoting he had offspring of both sexes. He explicitly names sons Richard Glanfeild (sole executor), John, Joseph, Benjamin, in that order probably denoting their birth sequence, also daughters Sarah (not yet aged 18), Elizabeth and her son Henry Atkinson (aged under 21) and other Atkinson children all aged under 21, Rose wife of John Clerke (as well as naming "son in law John Clerke")
He mentioned his son George after mentioning Sarah, but prior to his other daughters
He mentions a grandcihld Mary Sinch (under age of 18)
Most of the people named, including non family members were granted many hundred of pounds and/or land, denoting he was very wealthy indeed, the sum of one thousand pounds to his son John alone.
He goes on to direct that in case people are not living to inherit, their shares fall in sequence to Richard (and his heirs), John (and his heirs), Joseph (and his heirs) then Benjamin (and his heirs).
Witnesses were Wiliam Meale Henry Atkinson.
