He volunteered in 1915, and after his training was engaged on important duties with his unit at various stations. He gave valuable services, but was not able to secure his transfer overseas owing to ill-health, and was discharged in January 1917, as being medically unfit for further military service.

He had been in Fulham Military Hospital 17 May 1917. Hospitalised 15 - 18 Oct 1915 with influenza. Hospitalised Sevenoaks 10 Apr 1916 (1 day) for enlarged toe joint, then 10 Apr - 2 May 1916 in Eastern General Hospital Brighton for same, when the inner half of the the head of his 1st metatarsal had been removed. Again at Sevenoaks 15 Jun 1916 - 5 JUl 1916 for scabies. His toe joint disability was recorded as originalting from childhood in Stepney. He was confimed to barracks 2 days for being absent 9:30pm 13 Jun 1915 to 4pm 16 Jun 1915; has 120hrs detention for absence of 7hrs on 10 Jul 1915; 10 days confimed to barracks for being drunk in town about 09:30pm in June 1916. On 1 Feb 1917 the Supply Reserve Depot, Foreign Cattle Market, Deptford confirmed No 3514 Pte Glanville, F C was employed there as a Checker. He received the British War Medal and his record showed he did not serve overseas.
