A celebration of my Dad’s life…

On Saturday 17th January 2015 my world’s axis tilted and all be it momentarily time stood still; I’d lost my Dad.

It’s been 90 days since Dad passed away and had he been here with me today we’d be enjoying his 88th birthday. Dad didn’t care much for birthdays, he didn’t like celebrating the fact he was getting older… so today I’m quietly reflecting on his life by reproducing the obituary I wrote for him.

Patrick William Glanville: 16th April 1927~17th January 2015

The beautiful 16th Century Lanherne Convent in the village of St Mawgan-in-Pydar was filled to capacity with family, friends and representatives from many community organisations with several even standing outside for the funeral of Pat Glanville – who passed away on Saturday 17th January 2015, aged 87 years.

The Requiem Mass was celebrated by Father Anthony O’Gorman on Tuesday 27th January 2015.

Pat was born and grew up in Windsor Lane, St Mawgan in the idyllic setting of the Vale of Lanherne; a member of a close knit family presided over by loving parents Nick and Elizabeth Glanville with brothers Nick, Dick and Michael, sisters Joyce, Lucy and Julie and half sisters Millicent and Marion.

Pat attended church at Lanherne Convent for over eighty years being Baptised, taking his first Holy Communion and Confirmation in the tiny Catholic chapel, he also served as an altar boy under the observant gaze of the Carmelite Sisters.

On leaving the village school Pat followed in his father’s footsteps taking up the trade of stone mason and with the outbreak of the Second World War he proudly served his Country as a Royal Marine Commando. After demobilisation Pat returned home to St Mawgan taking up where he left off as a mason and promptly set up in business on his own.

Pat met and fell in love with St Columb girl Greta Curtis and they married on Shrove Tuesday in 1950. Greta’s brother Jack was great friends with Pat and joined him in the building business to form ‘Curtis and Glanville Builders of St Columb’. In early 1971 Reg Searles’ ironmongers and builders’ merchants in Fair Street, St Columb was purchased and soon ‘Glanvilles’ became a by-word for good service and wide- ranging merchandise.

Meanwhile, Pat and Greta were blessed with the arrival of their son Peter and daughter Jane of whom they were justifiably proud. As the family grew and extended Pat delighted in the achievements of his 6 grandchildren Rachael, Jack, Nick, Ellie, Peter and Phoebe and 2 great-grandchildren Charles and Lerryn.

Pat was deeply involved with the community; he was a member of the Royal British Legion becoming President of the St Columb Branch, for many years he served on the League of Friends for the Retreat Hospital, he was also involved with the Carnival Committee, the Gardening Club, the Youth Club and the St Columb Institute Trust and was proud to have served as Chairman of the St Columb, Indian Queens, St Mawgan and St Wenn Board of School Governors plus Chair St Columb Parish Council and the St Columb Chamber of Commerce.

He forged lifelong friendships with many of the officers and men stationed at Royal Air Force St Mawgan and also those in the United States Naval Weapons Facility; he was an honorary member of the Officers Mess at RAF St Mawgan for over thirty years.

Pat was Captain of Newquay Golf Club in 1974 and later captained Newquay Golfing Seniors in 1995 and was also a founder member of the Cornish Nomad Golf Society. He was a lifelong supporter of Plymouth Argyle Football Club and had also been a member of the Plymouth Argyle Vice Presidents Club.

Pat was a member of Newquay Rotary Club and went on to become the Founder President of St Columb Rotary Club. Some years later he returned to Newquay Rotary Club and was honoured to be installed as their President and have bestowed upon him the Paul Harris Fellowship Award for exceptional service.

Throughout his incredibly full life Pat was loyally supported by Greta who was always by his side at dinners and social events or entertaining guests at ‘Uplands’, their family home of more than 50 years. Sadly, Pat lost Greta – his perfect partner in December 1997.

In retirement Pat enjoyed being a member of St Columb Probus Club and St Mawgan History Group.

Over the last few years Pat resided with his son Peter and daughter-in-law Pam as ill-health necessitated continuous attention and care. He was enveloped in love by his whole family and died peacefully at ‘Benn Park’ on the morning of Saturday 17th January 2015.

Pat is survived by his children Peter and Jane, daughter-in-law Pam, son-in-law Mark, brother Michael and sisters Lucy and Julie.
