John J. Glanville Professor emeritus, San Francisco State University, died on November 20th at the age of 89. He is survived by his wife Carol, son James, daughters Julia and Sarah, son-in-law Kai Lundgren-Williams, grandson Ilari, and sister-in-law Alice Broquist. A specialist in ancient and medieval philosophy, John taught for 60 years, 41 of them at SFSU. Born in the Buffalo, N.Y. area in 1921, he was a graduate of St. John's College, Minn. He received his Ph.D from Notre Dame and did post-doctoral studies in Toronto and Switzerland. Several generations of students will remember his exacting standards and the care with which he encouraged their work. Many of them went on to become professors themselves. John was an ardent union member and was an active participant in the 1968 strike at SFSU and at St. John's University, N.Y. in 1966. A memorial mass will be held at the old Mission Dolores on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 11:00am. A reception follows in the church hall.

Born in Glen Ridge, Catherine was the daughter of Felix and Ethel (nee Boesz) Barthelemy. Growing up in Nutley, she met Robert L. Glanville while both were working for NJ Bell. On October 16, 1955, the two married and settled in Pompton Plains.
A homemaker, Catherine created a loving and nurturing environment in which to raise her four children. A parishioner of Our Lady of Good Council R.C. Church, she volunteered much of her time there.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Robert L. Glanville; her mother, Ethel Barthelemy; her sons, Mark and his wife Barbara and Thomas and his wife Kristina; her daughters, Patricia Moloughney and her husband Vincent and Maureen Reda and her husband John; her brother, Louis J. Barthelemy; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will begin 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, and will proceed to an 11 a.m. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Good Council R.C. Church in Pompton Plains. Cremation will be private.
Visiting hours will be Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Carrollton, VA Charles Frederick “Fred” Glanville, 78, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Tuesday, February 27, 2018. Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Fred was preceded in death by his loving wife, Pamela Moore Glanville, his father, Charles L. Glanville, and by his mother, Bess D. Glanville. He was a proud and loving father to David (Lisa) Glanville, Lora (David) Saunders, Peter (Carol) Glanville, and Charles A. Glanville. Fred was the grandfather to Brian and Amy Saunders, Marrena Glanville, and Camryn Glanville. He is also survived by his brother, Allen (Leigh) Glanville, and his sister, Jane (John) Crotts; a niece and nephews, along with his caretaker Debbie Wilson. Fred graduated from Princess Ann High School in 1958 where he wrestled and played football, afterwards attending his beloved Virginia Tech. He spent most of his career selling steel for the family business, Tidewater Steel Company. Moving to Carrollton in 1986 he was active member at Christ Episcopal Church and a member of the Smithfield Kiwanis and Lions clubs. Fred was committed to a life of service and philanthropy for many organizations, most notably, working to establish the Isle of Wight Christian Outreach Program where he served as President for many years. Fred was also very active in the Norfolk Sports Club where he served as President. He was a lifelong Boy Scout, attaining the rank of Eagle and earning the Silver Beaver for distinguished service to the Tidewater Council for his many fundraising activities. He also enjoyed being the Voice of the Eagle during the Boy Scout Court of Honor Ceremonies. Family and friends will gather 5-6:30 pm, Friday, March 2, 2018 for visitation in Colonial Funeral Home. A service celebrating Fred’s life will be held 2:00 pm, Saturday, March 3, in Christ Episcopal Church, 111 South Church Street, Smithfield. His body will then be taken to Moore Family Cemetery for interment 2:00 pm, Sunday, March 4.
